Elinor held her close, laughing with enjoyment at her ardor. "Boys! boys!" said Jen, annoyed at this quarrel, "do not be so positive. If you are both in love with the same woman, let the woman decide." "I promise you," said Jen again. "Please go. Miss Dallas. There is no time to be lost, and you must not be found here.".

"If you mean Dr. Etwald, he will have enough to do to look after himself. Well, Mrs. Dallas, as I have learned what I wished to know, I shall now take my leave." Elinor and Judith were very enthusiastic over the intent, studious figure that bent over its book in such lifelike fashion. Hillsboro is a very peculiar little speck on the universe; even more peculiar than being like a hen. It is one of the oldest towns in the North, and the moss on it is so thick that it can't be scratched off except in spots. But when it does get stirred up to take an interest in anything, it certainly goes the pace. It hasn't had any real excitement for a long time, and I felt that it needed it. I rolled over and laughed into my pillow. "Assuredly," replied Etwald, fixing a piercing glance on the young man. "Do you refuse?".
